The Neil Desai Foundation

Neil Desai

Neil Desai died suddenly and unexpectedly in his sleep on the 5th September 2008 – his 22nd birthday – while on holiday in Spain with his girlfriend. His death caused immense shock and sadness for his family and friends. Neil died of an unidentified cardiac condition, which was eventually classified as Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (“SADS”). Neil was an incredibly talented individual; not only was he a first class student of Law at Nottingham University, he was a world-ranked squash player and an outstanding cricketer.

To honour all that Neil achieved in his short life, his family and friends set up the Neil Desai Foundation to support the Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) – a charity that raises awareness of SADS – along with other causes dear to Neil. And, because Neil played such an active part in Surrey Squash – representing the county at both junior to senior levels – with the help from his family, Surrey Squash set up the Neil Desai Series.

The Series comprises junior starter tournaments for squash beginners all the way from under nine years old through to under-17s.

Since its inception, almost 80 Neil Desai junior tournaments have taken place, with many players who started their squash journeys through these tournaments, going on to represent the county and, even, England.
