It was a hugely successful week for Surrey squash at the National Schools Squash Championships, held at Edgbaston Priory Club, with Surrey players playing a central role in some of the biggest results of the tournament.

The standout story came in the Key Stage 5 competitions, where Epsom College completed an incredible double by winning both the boys’ and girls’ national titles.

Epsom Boys Crowned National Champions

In a thrilling boys’ KS5 final, Epsom defeated defending champions Wycliffe College in a dramatic contest that went right down to the final match.

Wycliffe twice took the lead through victories from Casper Honegger and George Barker, but Epsom responded on both occasions thanks to strong wins from Surrey players Zac Woolven and Luke McBride, the reigning England U17 champion.

With the match level, England U19 No.2 Ronnie Hickling stepped onto court for the decisive tie. In his final appearance for the college, Hickling delivered under pressure to secure the winning point and seal the national title for Epsom.

Girls’ KS5 Title Also Heads to Surrey

Epsom’s success continued in the girls’ KS5 final, where they produced an impressive 4–1 victory over Kenilworth School.

Surrey players again played a key role in the triumph, with victories from Freya Gokani, India Smith, Isabella Hutton, and Maja Maziuk securing the championship.

Michael Johnson, Director of Sport at Epsom College, praised the quality of the finals:

“The quality of squash across both finals was magnificent. I’ve seen some high-level squash before but this was truly outstanding.
Ronnie Hickling has been at the college since Year 7 and to see him claim the decisive victory in his last match for us was an amazing moment.”

Surrey Talent at the Heart of the Success

With numerous Surrey players involved across both squads, the results highlight the strength of the county’s junior pathway and the continued success of Surrey athletes competing at the highest level of school squash.

Winning both KS5 national titles is a remarkable achievement for Epsom College and a fantastic moment for Surrey squash, showcasing the depth of talent emerging from the county.
